Well it’s getting to that time of the year again when people start to take stock of their work / life balance. Maybe it’s the thoughts of being another year older, maybe it’s the thoughts of spending quality time with family over Christmas or maybe it’s the changing of the clocks with the dark and dreary evenings; but either way the next couple of weeks are a time of reflection for a lot of people.
Probably the most tormented souls of all, are those with an entrepreneurial spirit but are still working as employed. Halloween time of year often reminds me of these souls trapped in limbo as it never seems to be the right time to take that leap of faith into the world of being your own boss.
I meet dozens of these people every year and I have to say that while a large amount of people like the concept of being their own boss, very few actually have the capability of doing so. Of course there may be practical concerns over how to fund your business for the first couple of months but for those that truly want to be their own boss, then there is always a way.
You don’t have to go very far on the “Google Machine” to find any number of idiots offering you financial freedom if only you were to purchase this once off, last minute, never again available, exclusive book/course if all you did was invest .99 cent. Let me tell you from experience that if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it is a ……….
Thats right folks; the villas are rented, the fast cars and hired, the women are gorgeous but are actors. Only idiots believe that you can make millions by working an hour a day. Fact.
Let me tell you that there is nothing more rewarding than having financial freedom, having the ability to spend more time with family and more importantly doing something that you love. But as the great Rocky Balboa once famously said “It ain’t all sunshine and roses.”
But for those with the right temperament there are still fantastic opportunities out there and you shouldn’t rule out a franchise arrangement as a way to get started. Typically these models are less risky than getting in the boat alone. Unfortunately a large amount of franchisee arrangements require a huge amount of upfront capital but there are those companies, such as Dulann, that have very affordable opportunities for the right type of people. I have to express an interest in Dulann at this stage but you are all big boys and girls so ye can draw your own conclusions. They opportunity is unique insofar:
- There are no upfront franchise costs.
- There is no stock to buy or premises to rent.
- Every single employee in the country requires their services. It’s the law.
- You don’t need any specific previous training or qualification. Initial training to get going lasts in the region of two weeks.
- Finally, you can start the business while working in another job and ramp up your involvement.
So the biggest obstacle that most people face when weighing up the pros and cons of starting out on your own, can be best summed up by my old friend; Mr Balboa: “Until you start believing in yourself, you ain’t gonna have a life”. If you believe in yourself then you are always someone who dulann are interested in talking to.
Yes cultural fit will be vitally important but like all franchise models, your enthusiasm to succeed and your ability to follow tried and tested processes is a key ingredient to securing a franchise. If you are starting your own business you will need to be able to sell, you will need to be someone that is consistent and persistent.
I suppose it’s also important that you believe the “internet” isn’t a fad! The HSE and the HSA all use eLearning for their organisations. The legal profession, the financial profession and the medical professions have all used eLearning in Ireland for years. Most, if not all, of the large Global organisations use eLearning to deliver training consistently and efficiently. The large multiples in retail also all use eLearning so yes, if you believe that horses are still the most efficient mode of transport, then as the Spanish would say “adios”. For all others, see you on the other side.
Top 5 reasons to start your own business:
- You control your own destiny.
- Better work life balance because the hours you work are a matter for yourself and yourself alone.
- You take the risk but you can also reap the rewards.
- Do something you Like or even Love doing.
- Personal Fulfillment.
